of central intelligence, until friday, that was david petraeus, learned about this investigation into these emails that were described as harassing emails that were sent from paula broadwell to another woman. he learned about them on election day, on tuesday. on wednesday, he notified the white house. on thursday morning, the national security adviser, tom donovan, made the president aware, general petraeus was here, the former general, retired general, was here on thursday where he offered his resignation. the president slept on it overnight. called him back on friday and accepted the resignation. as far as the individual who rereceived the allegedly harassing emails from paula broadwell, our nbc's pete williams, our justice correspondent is reporting this afternoon, she was a civilian employee of the defense department contractor, not someone in the government or military. now about the benghazi angle of all this. of course david petraeus, as head of the c.i.a. was due to testify late next week, thursday, before the house and senate intelligence committees about what happened o

sources, the down fall of general david petraeus all started with a seemingly unrelated complaint to the fbi. officials say it was triggered by e-mails from paula broadwell to another woman not related to petraeus who felt she was being harassed and complained to the fbi. officials say in recent weeks, the fb icht traced the e-mails to broadwell and only stumbled on the relationship with petraeus as a result. >> my first reaction was disbelief. >> reporter: steven boylan worked with petraeus from 2005 to 2008, including in iraq. the two have remained close and spoke by phone on saturday. >> he said he had an excellent job, an exceptional family, he had had a great relationship he thought with the white house. and in his words, he screwed up. and he knows it. >> reporter: officials in washington are also still processing the stunning turn of events which started on tuesday. that's when the justice department notified the head of national intelligence, james clapper, about broadwe'll e-mails. and then clapper notified the white house wednesday. thursday morning, tom made the preside

four star general and c.i.a. chief david petraeus, here he is, quit last week after admitting that he had an affair with his biographer, paula broadwell. now, paula broadwell allegedly sent threatening e-mails to jill kelley who is a "tampa socialite" who did charitable work for the military. broadwell apparently thought that kelley was also having an affair with petraeus. and upon receiving broadwell's e-mails, kelley contacted the fbi which began investigating. now, jill kelley also has hired crisis communications expert judy smith. she has worked with monica lewinsky with kobe bryant and with former senator larry craig. and that all has a lot of folks scratching their heads. why would a woman who was the target of a nasty e-mail or two need a reputation fixer? well it turns out that while investigating petraeus, the fbi uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 potentially inappropriate pages of documents mostly e-mails that kelley exchanged with general john allen. and who is general john allen? he is the top u.s. commander i

. meanwhile, david petraeus' sudden departure as cia director has created lots of questions on capitol hill. especially that looming issue, the take in benghazi on a cia facility there. some senators still want to question petraeus about what went wrong. >> i know that we're interested in hearing from him. probably in front of the intelligence committee, which i also sit on. >> reporter: and an official tells us david petraeus will testify tomorrow in front of the senate committee in closed session. george? >> congress ramping up the questions, even as the fbi continues to investigate possible crimes. and abc senior justice correspondent pierre thomas has exclusive details on that. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. abc news has learned that paula broadwell, who allegedly had the affair with petraeus, is suspected of storing significant amounts of military documents, including classified material, at her home, possibly in violation of federal law. a source familiar with the case tells abc news broadwell admitted she took the documents from secure government buildings.

the affair that ended david petraeus' career as head of the cia. nbc reports the unraveling of the affair began as a cyber harass the probe late this spring. that's when jill kelly, a close friend of the petraeus family, reported she had received several anonymous and harassing e-mails. the e-mails referred to kelly socializing with other generals in the tampa area, suggesting it was inappropriate and should stop. and warning her to stay away from petraeus. ultimately will the fbi traced the e-mails back to petraeus' biography paula broadwell. and during the investigation, they discovered e-mails from pa tray to us broadwell that showed the two were having an extramarital affair. there's still a lot we don't know about the petraeus resignation. why would paula broadwell send threatening e-mails to jill kelley? did broadwell have access to confidential information? while there are legitimate questions that need to be answered, some on the right are back to their old tricks trying to turn this into something it's not. >> this is an administration that is practicing now serial deception. thi
